I was provided with a curriculum for the purposes of this review and compensation for my time. All opinions expressed are my own.
When asked what being generous means to my kids, they responded with being kind. I agree with them, that if you are generous, you are kind, but I think being generous is even more than kindness. It is going above and beyond to help those around you.
How do you teach something like that? Especially to homeschool kids who are generally more secluded from the heartbreaking realities of our world?
Well, Generous Family has introduced a product designed to help cultivate generous hearts in our kids, the Generous Students Homeschool Curriculum Kit!
Why Should My Kids Learn to Be Generous?
There are many ways children benefit from having generosity as a character trait.
- Developing Empathy. In order to be generous, kids must learn to put themselves in the place of others and consider their needs. This increases their ability to understand the feelings of others or their empathy.
- Grow Compassion. Generous kids grow an even deeper form of empathy where they not only understand others' feelings and needs but also desire to help those people. This is compassion.
- This compassion and generosity towards others naturally leads them to want to contribute to the people around them or their community. This helps them by giving them a sense of belonging.
- All of these things combine to lead generous kids to a more fulfilling life. Who doesn't want their kids to be satisfied in their life while helping others along the way?

How to Use the Generous Students Curriculum
The Generous Students Homeschool Curriculum Kit is intended to be used by students ages 5-18 years old. This means the whole family can have this experience and grow together!
It teaches how to be generous in seven ways: with thoughts, words, time, influence, attention, money, and belongings. This is great because so many people only think of money and belongings when it comes to generosity.
Ideally, each child would have a student journal, but that being said, I can see older students preferring to keep their own journal with thoughts and reflections rather than answering the scripted journal questions. And littles may need to draw pictures or have you write answers for them so as not to hold up the whole family. But the content is definitely good for all ages!
When I mention the content I am really talking about the Generosity Heroes stories and the additional videos in the online library. The Generosity Heroes are not just missionaries or Biblical personalities (although there are some of those), but they are also a variety of people who have simply shown the compassion of Christ to their fellow humans. There are also some powerful videos there that not only show some brutal realities in age-appropriate ways but also show what having a generous heart can do for those living these realities.
The instructor's guide gives specific instructions for days 1, 2, and 3 of each week. For days 4 and 5 (or just day 4 if you are on a 4-day week), it gives you additional books to check out and other activity ideas to choose from that will fit your child(ren)'s needs.
The instruction for each day takes about 10 minutes depending on how much you and your children discuss. This makes it a very easy addition to your schedule and a great addition to breakfast, lunch, or even dinner if you want to include Dad.
A Few More Tips to Grow Generosity
Of course, once through a curriculum won't make your kids develop a generous heart. You have to put it into practice! And I do mean you because kids copy what they see you do. A few tips to do this:
- Model generosity by sharing your time, money, and resources.
- Talk about generosity, why it is important, and different ways to show it.
- Give them opportunities to volunteer or donate.
- Praise them when you catch them being generous to others!
